Block unveils new square stand for iPad with NFC card reader

The well-known payments company Block (formerly Square) has long offered solutions for merchants who use iPads as sales stations. However, this time around, Block is now introducing a new iPad stand with a built-in NFC reader for payments.

Update: Block has officially unveiled the new generation Square Stand for iPad.

The new Square Stand is now available for $149, but it only works with the entry-level iPad (7th generation and later), the third generation iPad Air, and the original 10.5-inch iPad Pro. Customers can purchase an eighth-generation iPad directly from the Square website when ordering a new Square Stand.

It should be noted that the new square stand is only compatible with NFC cards or chipsets. For those who still want to accept payments with magnetic stripe cards, be sure to check out the free Square Reader order option for a magstripe chip.

Image found in the internal files of the official Square app (via Bloomberg) shows the new 3rd Generation “Square Stand,” a product that integrates with iPad and is connected to a credit card reader. But unlike its predecessors, the new stand is a major upgrade for the accessory as it integrates both a physical credit card reader and an NFC reader into one device.

Although technical details about the new suite are unknown, it will make it easier for merchants to use the iPad as a sales station. Instead of having to attach an external card reader, sellers will have everything they need to sell their products in the new stand. Of course, everything should work seamlessly with the Square app.

Block doesn’t say when the new iPad stand will be available on the market, but that should happen soon, as images of the accessories were recently added to the company’s app. The current Square Stand, which costs $169, is one of the company’s most popular products.

This year Apple introduced a new Tap to Pay feature, which turns iPhones into contactless payment terminals. And as I wrote before, Apple can turn your iPad into a definitive payment terminal if it’s equipped with NFC technology. The iPad’s large screen is ideal for serving not only as a payment terminal, but also as a complete system for sellers to register, manage and sell their products.
