How to reset the Amazon Fire TV Stick remote control

If you are having issues with your Amazon Fire TV Stick remote, it is helpful to reset the remote to most likely fix these issues. The reset process varies depending on your model, and we will show you the processes for the most common Fire TV Stick remotes.

Resetting Basic Version Fire TV Stick Remote

If you have the remote control from the basic version, which looks like the following, you will reset it as follows.

Reset the remote control in the basic version.

  1. Press and hold the Home button and then tap the Menu button (three horizontal lines) three times.
  2. Release the Home button, then press the Menu button nine times.
  3. Pull the batteries out of the remote control.
  4. Unplug the Fire TV Stick and wait for a minute.
  5. Reinsert the batteries into the remote control and turn on the Fire TV Stick.
  6. When the Fire TV Stick home screen opens, on the remote control, press and hold the Home button for 40 seconds.
  7. Setup will complete in one minute.

Resetting a first generation Fire TV Stick remote control

The Fire TV Stick’s first-generation remote doesn’t offer the power and volume buttons, but you can still reset it using the following steps.

Reset the first generation remote control.

  1. Unplug the Fire TV Stick power cord and wait for one minute.
  2. On the remote control, press and hold the Left and Menu buttons at the same time for 12 seconds.
  3. Release the buttons and wait for five seconds.
  4. Remove the remote control batteries.
  5. Plug in the power cord of the Fire TV Stick until the device turns on, then wait a minute.
  6. Put the batteries back into the remote control.
  7. Press the home button on the remote control.

Reset 2nd and 3rd Generation, Voice Remote Lite, Smart TV Remote, Soundbar Remote

If your Fire TV Stick remote doesn’t look like the above, your device is either 2nd or 3rd generation, Voice Remote Lite, Smart TV Remote, or Soundbar remote. In this case, you will reset the remote control as follows.

The remote layout may be slightly different, but you will be using the same keys.

  2. On the remote control, press and hold the Left, Menu and Back buttons at the same time for 12 seconds.

  5. Plug in the power cord of the Fire TV Stick and turn on the device. Then wait 60 seconds.
  6. Replace the remote control batteries.
  7. Press the home button on the remote control.
