Laptop gaming is really coming to the fore in 2022. New laptops and chipsets are announced, and of course there’s Valve’s Steam Deck release. The Switch-like gaming laptop has made waves, and Valve is already planning a Steam Deck 2.
What was as impressive as the small unit itself, was the push towards compatibility. There are tons of games running on Steam Deck, but they tend to differ in how well they work. Thankfully, Steam has a verification system to help people with the process, which rates games for how well they work with the new PC hybrid console.
For a Steam Deck game to be verified, it must run perfectly smoothly on Steam Deck, just like it does on a PC. Although there are an unfathomable number of games on the platform, it is safe to say that most users probably only care about a few. The Top 100 Games on Steam is a pretty safe bet for games that people are interested in, so Boiling Steam has made calculations about how many of these games are supported.
It turns out that 28 of the top 100 Steam games are Steam Deck Verified. This includes popular titles such as Elden Ring, Apex Legends, and Valheim as well as 25 other games. It’s really not a bad piece of gaming that does well on the new portable console, but it does get better.
The next step in Steam Deck Verified is a bootable Steam Deck. These are games that don’t have as good a deck experience as you get on a PC, or may not have been verified yet. It’s a safe bet that you can try and add 26 more games to the list among the top 100 titles.
Games from this list include Counter-Strike: Source and Global Offensive, Dota 2, and Skyrim. They are often very popular games and are a bit older, so they could be a little lower on the priority list. However, this aggregates as many as 54 out of 100 of the most popular games on Steam and running deck. That’s over 50% for the math geeks out there.
The rest of the top 100 titles fall into either the unsupported or untested categories. Twenty-six of the top 100 games on Steam are listed as unsupported, and for many reasons is the anti-cheat software, which is difficult to implement and get around the Steam Deck. It is possible that without much incentive, most developers will not be able to allocate the resources to run this command, and these games may still be unsupported.
That leaves 20 games not yet rated for Steam Deck, but honestly, some of them are still worth trying. It’s surprising how many games run well enough on the small device without support.
Steam Deck’s library of portable PC games is already impressive, and it looks like it’s going to grow. It looks like 2022 could really be the year of Steam Deck.
